cvHockey in Japands

Street Hockey United visited Japan in November of 2008 and through the generosity of sponsors, managed to bring over five dozen hockey sticks, several dozen street hockey balls and four complete sets of goalie equipment that were donated to Kariya, Japan schools.

Street Hockey United visited two schools in Japan and taught over 200 Japanese children, as well as their teaching staff, the basics of hockey. All the hockey equipment was then donated to the schools in hopes that hockey would continue to be taught. One of our goals was to somehow have hockey continue to be taught once we were gone, that was one of the reasons we donated all the equipment.

We were overjoyed when we heard that hockey had indeed been added to the school’s physical activity curriculum. Street Hockey United has now been officially invited back to the City of Kariya, Japan to continue the tour of schools this autumn. We will even be expanding our tour and including schools in the neighbouring City of Nagoya.

We are currently looking for four Mississauga residents over the age of 21 to help teach the hockey program in Japan. Applicants must be physically fit, have previous coaching and/or hockey experience, as well as experience working with children. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity, as each member will be staying with a host family in Kariya, Japan.

The mission will be 8 days in length and will take place from November 11 to 18 of this year. The only cost that will be incurred is the cost of the flight (which will be subsidized) and roughly $200 in miscellaneous costs. Food, accommodations and travel costs within Japan will all be covered. If you are interested in joining this delegation please Gary Williams, Executive Director, Street Hockey United at gary@streethockeyunited.com.
